Pupil Needs

The Bio-Psycho-Social Model of Mental Helath

The Biopsychosocial model suggests that to understand a person's needs it is best to view a triad of three factors -  biological, psychological, or social factors.

  • Bio (physiological pathology)
  • Psycho (thoughts emotions and behaviours such as distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods and attribution)
  • Social (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors suchs as home issues, family circumstances and family economics)

By identifying individual strands to the Social, Emotion & Mental Health issues facing our pupils it is possible to provide individual support to create a holistic approach to pupil SEMH.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Need

When pupils needs are not met it can often be observed through connection needing behaviours. If the need remains unmet it will often lead to behaviours which are detrimental to a thriving community.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need (as detailed above) is a bottom up structure where a humans basic needs must be met first in order to ultimately achieve Self-actualisation.

If a pupil were to come in to school without their most basic needs (Physiological needs) met they are unlikely to be able to fulfil their other needs. Whilst we have a safe guarding responsibility to record and report these issues we are also responsible to meet and fulfil all of these needs.
