Reading

Intent

We aim for our reading curriculum to be inclusive, engaging and tailored to our students’ needs. Together, we work to meet our students where they are, empower them to push themselves, and achieve their potential.

Our intent is to enable our children to:

·       Read age-appropriate texts fluently and with age-appropriate comprehension

·       Increase fluency when reading unfamiliar texts and passages using an appropriate speed and using proper conventions within reading

·       Use essential key reading skills to deepen comprehension of age-appropriate texts

·       Become confident readers who read to learn and for pleasure

·       Develop a habit of reading a variety of texts and reading often

·       Acquire a wide vocabulary with strong speaking and listening skills

Implementation

Reading is taught daily throughout the school. KS1 participate in daily phonics lessons using the Read Write Inc. program. Reading comprehension and vocabulary are taught throughout the day through other subjects and during class time. KS2 participate in phonics intervention lessons as needed and hold daily reading lessons incorporating fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills throughout the lessons. Fluency is practised throughout both schools using choral reading strategies, repeated readings, and modelling. We follow Hampshire reading learning journeys and structures when planning daily reading lessons using text drivers. These text-drivers are catered to the interests of needs of the children throughout the both schools. Using text drivers as the basis of a learning journey allow our teachers to cater to the necessary comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills applied directly into a book and these can be clearly modelled and explicitly taught. These text-drivers are catered to the interests of needs of the children throughout the both schools.

Phonics is taught daily throughout KS1. All students are levelled and half-termly assessed to show growth and move groups as needed. All teachers and LSAs are highly trained in delivering effective phonics lessons. As students move out of RWI, they are put into a group heavily focused on fluency and developing comprehension to prepare for KS2 reading lessons.

Impact

We measure the success of our reading curriculum through:

·       Students working through and completing the RWI phonics program by the end of Year 1

·       Accurately decoding age-appropriate tricky words through reading a variety of texts e.g. such as picture books, non-fiction texts, foundation texts, novels, reading passages, etc.

·       Increasing accuracy through reading a variety of unfamiliar, age-appropriate passages

·       Students increasing in their reading fluency through periodic fluency assessments and measured against age-appropriate fluency expectations

·       Consistent growth through regular comprehension passages and assessments leading up to the termly assessments

·       Assessment for learning is used to incorporate comprehension questions within each reading lesson to practice comprehension skills and become with certain question types within reading assessments

·       Growth throughout using comprehension skills as measured on termly reading comprehensions assessments
