Intent

In PE at Riders school, we instill a love of physical activity by giving our children opportunities to develop physical skills, within PE lessons, break time and lunchtime, in order to become physically confident and achieve competence. Through PE and physical activity, children are taught how to become resilient learners in order to overcome challenges, through a range of activities. Children use physical activity to develop an understanding of self-regulation and the role that being active has in managing their emotions in wider life. Children are encouraged to be creative learners and how to work co-operatively towards a shared goal. Through a range of competitions, both inside school and wider community, children are taught how to be respectful participants and how to respect the environment and equipment used.

Implementation

At Riders, PE is an integral part of our curriculum, it is inclusive, and engages all pupils. Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week. Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and age-appropriate sports. This allows them to access an exciting variety of opportunities that they may not encounter in their day to day lives. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities, which enables all children to achieve their personal best.

Lunchtime supervisors are tasked with organising physical activities and small games for children to interact with at lunchtime; this is supported by the PE lead. Swimming is an important life skill; we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres. Children in Upper Key Stage Two participate in Bike Ability sessions.

We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. Our staff remove barriers to taking part in these events, offering encouragement, full equipment (including clothing) and transportation. Annually, the school celebrates Sports Day to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in a wide range of inclusive, competitive activities and sports. Linking to our House system, a strong emphasis is placed on our school values: Community, Opportunity, Achievement, ‘Standing together with our community to unlock opportunity and secure achievement for all.’

Impact

Through PE, we will equip our children with the necessary skills and knowledge to live healthy, active lives.
